What is my baby's first aid? Best baby answers you

The delivery of your baby is a milestone in your life, but so it is for the medical staff around you. Discover with Best Baby how your midwife, obstetrician and pediatrician will welcome your baby and provide him with immediate care.

Baby's birth: The first acts

From the first moments of your baby’s delivery and after cutting the cord, the birth attendant takes your baby to put him on a hot table, also called open incubator. The role of this incubator is to help the small to keep a temperature around 37°C, but also to protect him/her from certain infections.

The operation of the heart and lungs is also checked at this stage using white pastilles or electrodes. At the slightest anomaly, all the necessary steps are taken to restore your baby’s good health.

The famous Apgar test makes it easy and fast to determine the severity of the situation and to plan the necessary interventions.

The Apgar test: What is it exactly?

The Apgar test is a factor that informs about your baby’s health and takes place three times from his/her birth: at one, five and ten minutes of life. Named after the American anaesthetist Virgina Apgar, the Apgar test is based on five criteria:

  • Appearance (The skin color)
  • Pulse (The heart rate)
  • Grimace (Responsiveness)
  • Activity (Musclar tone)
  • Respiration

In the study of these criteria, a score of 0 to 2 is attributed to each of them to finally obtain the Apgar coefficient: a note that varies between 0 and 10.

For an Apgar score of seven points or more, your baby is in good health and does not need any special medical care. A note between five and seven means that his/her health is fair and that probably a little respiratory help is needed.

The intervention of a pediatrician would be essential in case the Apgar score does not exceed five points.

Routine gestures at baby’s birth

After performing the Apgar test, comes the turn of a set of routine gestures that represent the steps of a complete exam:

  • Determine the weight of the baby.
  • Measure the baby’s size and the cranial perimeter.
  • Take his/her temperature.
  • Eliminate phlegm that clogs the airways, using a catheter inserted into the baby's mouth and nostrils.
  • Check the absence of esophagus’ malformation through a probe introduced into the stomach.
  • Check the permeability of the anus and if it is in its place.

Specific care at birth

Your baby’s eyes care is done automatically and as a preventive measure against any infection that may occur to the eyes. This care is performed with antibiotic eye drops infused into your baby's eyes.

Specific birth care also applies to the umbilical cord where a set of usual gestures is performed:

  • Ligation of the cord
  • The cut of the cord
  • Disinfection of the navel
  • Compress establishment on the cord, if necessary.

What products to buy for the baby’s bath?

You can not wait to plunge your little darling into the bath? Here are some tips to give your baby a healthy and pleasant bath:

  • 37°C is the ideal temperature for your baby's bath.
  • Use a soap-free washing gel
  • Dermo-cleansing products present both shampoo and gel for your baby.
  • If the water is hard, the emollient gels enriched with cold cream are highly recommended.
  • The washing oils are also recommended for a healthy bath without paraben, perfumes, alcohol, dyes, etc.
  • A few minutes will suffice for maximum relaxation and cleanliness.
  • The frequency of baths per week has neither rules nor limits.

Clean the baby's face

After a relaxing bath of a few minutes, comes the turn to clean our newborn's face:

  • Clean the eyes with a compress impregnated with saline solution. Apply gentle motion from the inside to the outside of the eye to effectively remove any uncomfortable secretions. Use a compress for each eye.
  • Wash the nose of your little baby who is not big enough to blow his nose alone. Use a physiologic serum to do this.
  • Eliminate the plates that may form on your baby’s skull, called “milk scabs”, using a specific gel or shampoo recommended by your pharmacist.
  • For facial hygiene, use only warm water and a compress. Avoid irritating your baby's skin with soap.
  • The care of the cord is also necessary until it falls and disappears. A compress, water and soap is all you need to clean it. Do not forget to dry it gently.

Clean the baby’s seat

Choose from a wide range the product you need to clean your toddler's seat. Depending on the situation, you will need:

  • Cotton soaked in warm water and some mild soap.
  • Cotton impregnated in the famous mixture of olive oil with lime water, which cleans the seat of your baby without irritating it.
  • Toilet milk, but whose application must be followed by a cleansing water.
  • Thermal water, effective especially in the period of diaper rash.
  • Specific creams for the exchange, whose composition contains zinc oxide. They have an effective protective effect against diapers but remain difficult to clean.
  • Dry lotions, as alternatives to talc.
  • Baby wipes. We recommend Best baby wipes which, thanks to their healthy and effective cleaning composition, are the ideal choice for your baby's hygiene.

Moisturize the baby's skin

To moisturize the infant’s skin, several moisturizing solutions exist and adapt to the needs of each skin. Indeed, you can opt for body milk, a classic solution that perfectly nourishes the skin of your baby, often exposed to the clothing’s friction.

If the skin of your little darling is too delicate, the cream with cold cream would be a perfect solution with its lasting moisturizing effect. Not forgetting the massage oils that, thanks to their many benefits, remain the excellent choice for delicate skin’s hydration with safety.
